The husband of Ereshkigal, though some would say it is an odd pairing. But their love for one another is enternal, though they are sometimes at odds with one another. Worship of Culnul is not prohibited, but mainly due to their secretive nature, and the fear from the general populace, Culnul's temples are not built out in the open.

In The Worship of Culnul

The history of Culnul worshipers and Varana is long indeed, with various sects breaking off and rejoining the Empire. While worship of the God of Undeath is not forbidden, due to past betrayals, cults of Culnul are often regarded with suspicion. This suspicion was magnified with Canas' use of undead. Such prejudice forced the worshipers of Culnul underground.

Death Seekers of Culnul

These clerics are the backbone of Culnul worship. Seizing on Culnul's title of the Betrayer of Life, these priests spend years researching ways to take lives rather than save them. One of their best tactics is to convince the godless that once saved by a priest of Culnul from death, that the godless one's soul is now Culnul's. The priests rule by fear and intimidation, using their mastery of the undead and threats of making the living undead to control their flock. The Blackshields answer to the Death Seekers and are often given positions as bodyguards for the priests and priestess.

The Blackshields of Culnul

The Blackshields of Culnul are a warrior sect composed of fighters, Blackguards, and warrior clerics. They often take positions within the military in times of war, for battle is their joy. It is widely believed that the souls of any felled by a Blackshield of Culnul is immediately claimed by the Grub Lord.

Scavengers of Culnul

Once known as the Bodysnatchers, this is a group of rogues and shadowdancers in the service to the Death Seekers. They work in the darkness of night, robbing the graves of the newly dead for valuables as well as body parts for the Death Seekers to experiment on. It is often said they operate out of the seedier parts of towns, and that all the bodies they collect may not be dead when first taken. Mothers often frighten children into being home after dark by telling them "Culnul's Scavengers haunt the darkness and will come for you if you misbehave."

The Decayed

This sect of mages work with the Death Seekers and at times actively seek to claim leadership. These necromancers, mages, and palemasters are dangerous adversaries, using their control of undead to inspire fear. The greatest ranks of these mages are actively seeking the greatest blessing they feel can be granted by Culnul - lichdom. Few have succeeded in receiving such a blessing, but many still seek the path.
