Wizard Question

Postby Domina » Wed Sep 07, 2016 5:48 am

So, I heard mages can also learn spells from scrolls they randomly find, but only up to a certain level?

Can someone clarify this for me? I'm trying my first arcane character!

Please and thank you, loves.

They can learn those scrolls of the spell level they have access to. So a level 5 wizard or comparable through other classes could copy scrolls to his or her spell book that are max spell level 3. A level 11 can do up to level 6 spells etc.
You need level 17 for level 9 spells on scrolls.
The scroll you learn from disappears then.
If you already have the spell in your book it doesnt but you can use it (consume)

Its helpful to gather as many as you can so that when you level up you can access as many spells right away. I probably have a scroll of every scribable spell so far, so I can make you spells if you need.

One thing that should be taken into consideration is the cost of scribing. Depending on the 'rules' in place and the availability of gold, scribing can be a minor inconvenience or a major cost obstacle. Some systems try to equate the cost of each scroll with that of the difficulty (level) of the spell AND the components (from 3.5 rule books etc) required, making some spells very expensive to scribe. Other systems adopt a more uniform and less expensive system using a nominal price per spell level and one or two gold for the cost of a blank scroll.

Whatever the case, the dev's should (not saying they will or are inclined to do so) publish a cost table. You're obviously not the first wizard on the block or in this 'world' and making the costs obscure and only discovered by trial and error ignores the fact that in any 'world' this has been done before, LOTS. It would be common knowledge to the wizard class as they hobnobbed with their peers and participated in fraternal gatherings. If this is not the case, then I would suspect that spells in general be acquired in some mystical fashion more akin to clerical acquisition than the 'learned' ways of mages.

They have said before that they like to leave a lot of this stuff up to us to discover but I've found that they haven't changed the cost of scribable spells from vanilla. Its on the nwn2 wiki if you are curious what spells are scribable and how much they cost.
